Why See an Orthodontist?

Why Choose an Orthodontist for Your Family’s Smile?

Just like medicine has specialists like cardiologists and dermatologists, dentistry has its own specialists which includes orthodontists. Orthodontists are dental specialists who focus exclusively on straightening teeth and correcting jaw alignment to help you achieve a healthy, confident smile that lasts a lifetime.

Expert Training

Orthodontists are fully qualified dentists who have completed an additional three years of full-time university training in a specialist orthodontic program. These programs are supervised by experienced orthodontists and focus intensively on tooth movement, facial development, and jaw alignment. This makes orthodontists highly trained experts in creating beautiful, functional smiles.

Common Questions

Your Orthodontic Journey with Apex Orthodontics and Dr Gwengo

At Apex Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves the confidence of a healthy smile. We understand that starting treatment can come with a lot of questions. Here are some of the most common queries we receive.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No referral is needed! You’re welcome to book directly with us. If you haven’t seen a general dentist recently, we may ask that you have a dental check-up before starting treatment. If you don’t currently have a dentist, we’re happy to recommend one from our trusted network.

Do braces or clear aligners hurt?

Braces and aligners don’t hurt when they’re applied, but it’s normal to experience mild discomfort for a few days afterward. This sensation is temporary and similar to post-exercise soreness—it means your teeth are starting to move! Over-the-counter pain relief (like Panadol or Nurofen) can help during this adjustment period.

Most patients quickly adapt and find the rest of their treatment comfortable and easy to manage. Dr Gwengo and our team are here to support you every step of the way with tips and advice to make your experience smoother.

Will I need to change what I eat or do?

Some small adjustments are helpful. With braces, it’s best to avoid very sticky or hard foods to prevent damage to your appliance. That said, you’ll still have plenty of delicious options! We even provide soft-food recipe guides to help you out.

You can continue to play sports and musical instruments while in treatment. If you’re involved in contact sports, we recommend a braces-friendly mouthguard to protect your smile. For musicians, a short adjustment period is expected, and we’re happy to offer advice tailored to your instrument.

When should I bring my child to see Dr Gwengo?

We recommend a screening around age 7. This doesn’t mean treatment will start at that age—in fact, most kids won’t need anything right away. But early assessment allows Dr Gwengo to monitor jaw development and detect issues that could benefit from early guidance. It’s a proactive step that can often prevent more complex treatment later.

If no early treatment is needed, your child can join our Growth Monitoring Program, where we track their development and begin treatment at the ideal time.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

Comprehensive orthodontic care can vary significantly in cost, depending on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment. Limited treatments or minor corrections may cost less.

We believe your smile is a lifelong investment, and we’re committed to making it as accessible as possible with:

  • Interest-free payment plans
  • Upfront payment discounts
  • Family discounts
  • No hidden fees—your quoted fee includes appliances, check-ups, aftercare, and retainers

We’ll also provide item numbers for private health fund rebates so you can check your coverage with your insurer.

What types of braces or aligners are available for adults?

Whether your teeth have shifted over time or you’ve always wanted to make a change, we offer discreet, effective options:

  • Clear braces – Aesthetic ceramic braces that blend in with your teeth
  • Invisalign clear aligners – Nearly invisible and removable
  • Traditional metal braces – Now smaller, sleeker, and more comfortable than ever

Dr Gwengo will tailor your treatment to suit your goals, lifestyle, and budget.

How long will I need to wear braces or aligners?

Most treatments last 12 to 24 months, but this can vary depending on your individual needs. Dr Gwengo uses the latest technology to ensure the most efficient and effective treatment plan possible—without cutting corners.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes—but it’s simpler than you might think! Retainers help your teeth stay in their new position, especially right after braces or aligners are removed. You’ll wear your retainer more often at first, then gradually less over time.

Do I still need to see my family dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Absolutely. Regular dental check-ups are essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy while you’re in braces or aligners. Your general dentist will monitor things like cavities or gum health, while Dr Gwengo focuses on the alignment of your teeth and bite.
